Wilson's disease

Copper Storage disease also known as Wilson's disease, WD, Hepatolenticular Degeneration. I will be referring to it as Wilson's disease. Wilson's disease is a build up of copper in the body. This can lead to the degeneration of body organs. The liver is affected most by this disease followed by the brain.
Wilson's disease is located on chromosome 13 on the ATP7B gene.
This is a recessive autosomal disease meaning that males and females
have equal chances of getting the disease. It also means both of their
parents had to of had it for them to get it.

Wilson's disease shows up in people from 6-40 years of age, and most commonly found in older teens. The easiest way to diagnose the disease is to look at the eye to see if there is a copper tint around the cornea. Brain and liver problems can also help diagnose the problem.
Once the disease is discovered in the person the treatment is simple. You can use Penicillamine to absorb the excess copper in your body. You can also use high doses of zinc instead. Zinc is less effective than Penicillamine, but Penicillamine can cause severe nerve damage. You will have to take the pills for the remainder of your life, or at least until someones finds a true cure. If the disease progresses you may have to undergo liver/brain sugery as well
Current Research into this order is focused on a new drug. This new drug is called Tetrathiomolybdate Coprex.  It is similar in purpose to Penicillamine, but it does not cause nerve damage. The FDA is currently testing the product to make sure that it is safe to use.
The support groups for Wilson's disease is few in number as the time that you will have the most problems with it is before you know that you have it. There are some support groups that you can go to if you don't mind a ton of travel. An easier alternative is to join an internet based support group because it is closer and they are more numerous.
It is important to know that your eye may not always get a copper-ish tint to it as it only occurs in 60% of people with the disease. If one of your parent had the disease or you have been experiencing unexplained liver or brain problems (other than just being naturally stupid) you should get yourself tested for it. Doctors can look at the specific gene that holds the disease to find out if you have it or not. One in 30,000 people have Wilson's disease and if both of your parents have it you will have it.
